En Toutes Saisons recommends:
Situated at Les Eyzies de Tayac, the cave of Font de Gaume is one of the most beautiful Paleolithic sanctuaries of the world, the only one with polychromatic paintings which is still open to the public. It is accessible via a 400m long pathway which follows a ledge overhanging the dry valley below. It consists of a central gallery of 120m long with three side galleries leading off. It is home to over 200 painted or engraved pictures of bisons, horses, mammouths, reindeer and human figures etc painted on friezes or even in scenes. By stylistic comparison, these artistic testimonies are generally connected with the Magdalenian period (about 15000 BC)
For conservation reasons, the number of places is limited to 80 per day. Tickets are on sale on site for each day. Reservation is not possible.
